Embracing Change

This week I was discussing the difficulties of making life changes with one of my clients. He noted that since he was older, it was probably too late to make any big changes and he should learn to live with things as they are, even though he doesn't like things as they are. Obviously, this was rather depressing to him.

I talked about the concept of Impermanence and how nothing stays the same in life. We experience different activities and events that have an impact on our values and beliefs, often changing them in substantial ways. Anyone who has a baby comes to realize that their world has substantially changed, especially at 3 AM when you have to get out of that comfortable bed to feed and change the baby.

I'm currently undergoing a big change in my life as I transition from having a part-time to full-time private practice and leaving an agency I've worked at for 7 years, which also means leaving a number of clients I've had strong relationships with. This is hard but also an important step for my growth as a person and a professional.

Change is something we can't not do. Change is something we have to recognize as inevitable and if we can embrace change, we can use it to create positive changes in our lives, one step at a time.
